GIZ and Smart Freight Centre Announce Strategic Collaboration to Advance Sustainable Maritime Freight through Greener Reefers

Hamburg, June 2, 2025 — Today, at the Hamburg Sustainability Conference (HSC), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and Smart Freight Centre (SFC) officially announced a mutual collaboration and support to accelerate the global transition to sustainable maritime freight transport. The work will promote the development and adoption of Greener Reefers, a new generation of energy-efficient, climate-friendly refrigerated shipping containers.

SAN FRANCISCO, April 28, 2025 - Smart Freight Centre, a global non-profit organization focused on climate action in the freight sector, today announced that additional world-leading shippers and carriers have joined the first-of-its-kind I-10 coalition to test long-haul heavy-duty battery-electric vehicle operations along the US I-10 corridor between Los Angeles, California and El Paso, Texas. New members C.H. Robinson, DHL Supply Chain, Electrolux Group, and IKEA have joined the coalition alongside previously announced members including AIT Worldwide Logistics, Maersk, Microsoft and PepsiCo.

SFC's Conformity Assessment Scheme: Ready to assure your Market Based logistics reporting

Smart Freight Centre launched its Conformity Assessment Scheme to increase trust in GHG emissions reporting in the market. Whenever a company reports its greenhouse gas emissions inventory – be it to customers, investors or other stakeholders – the comfort that an independent third-party verification provides is undeniable. Based on ISO 14083, SFC built a scheme to train, assess and approve Validation and Verification Bodies to do competent assurance engagements in the logistics sector. In 2023, SFC approved the first Validation and Verification Body for verifying GHG emission claims in accordance with ISO 14083 for freight transport: Verifavia. Over the last two years, another three VVBs have joined that first one as Approved for the ISO 14083 scope.

Global stakeholders involved in the transportation of finished vehicles by sea came together to launch the standard methodology for scope 3 Greenhouse Gas emissions accounting for deep-sea Ro-Ro shipping.
