From a Kitchen Table to Global Impact: Smart Freight Centre Reaches 200 Members
Amsterdam, October 29, 2025 - In 2013, Smart Freight Centre was founded at a kitchen table by Sophie Punte who had a bold vision, a small team of dedicated people, and a mission that was ahead of its time: to make freight part of the climate solution. Fast forward to today, we’ve grown into a global non-profit organization with more than 80 employees and a thriving network of 200 members working together to decarbonize freight transportation worldwide.
This milestone isn’t just about numbers. It’s a reflection of shared purpose and hard work, our collective effort to make the logistics sector more transparent, collaborative, and future-ready.
Since 2020, our membership has grown from just 12 to 200 organizations, from shippers and carriers to solution providers, industry platforms, and policy leaders. Over the same period, our programs have expanded from 2 to 11, reaching new regions and tackling the complex, cross-cutting challenges of freight emissions.
What Our Community Represents in Numbers
Smart Freight Centre’s transport carrier members account for 65% of Scope 1 emissions disclosed by transport service companies globally in the CDP database, a total of over 420 million tonnes of CO₂e.
That’s nearly 10% of all transport sector emissions reported globally. To put this in perspective, if the emissions from our community’s members were those of a country, it would rank among the top 15 emitters globally.
Together, we have the power to drive the actions needed to reduce these emissions today.
The CO₂e emissions linked to SFC’s shipper and logistics service provider members account for approximately 25% of Scope 3 emissions isclosed under transport categories from all companies, which translates to 300 million tonnes. In other words, that is enough to fill 2.5 billion 40-foot containers with CO₂e.
Disclaimer: This analysis is based on data from the CDP questionnaire, it does not include all emissions from the global transport sector.
Not all SFC members report their emissions to CDP, this data is based only on the subset of both SFC members and CDP disclosers.
SFC encourages more freight and logistics companies to report their emissions to CDP to collaboratively work towards greater transparency of the sector.
Why We Exist
Our vision is a zero-emission global logistics sector by 2050 or earlier, aligned with a 1.5°C climate pathway. To get there, our mission is to accelerate the reduction of logistics emissions by fostering collaboration within the global logistics ecosystem.
We believe that collective action is the only path forward. That’s why our work focuses on:
- Enabling performance measurement of logistics GHG emissions to drive transparency and accountability
- Facilitating solution pathways and catalyzing partnerships across the value chain
- Educating and scaling up organizations to accelerate the uptake of decarbonization solutions
Our programs and partnerships are designed to turn ambition into action—empowering our members to lead by example, improve emissions performance, and create lasting change in the freight sector.
Why Join the SFC Community
Becoming a member of Smart Freight Centre means joining a growing global network of organizations committed to advancing freight decarbonization. Members gain access to our portfolio of technical programs, working groups, tools, training, and pilot projects designed to help them collaborate, innovate, and implement strategies that reduce emissions and improve supply chain economics.
Together, we are building a freight system that works for people, planet, and business.
We see Smart Freight Centre as a supportive network. So, everything's under one roof. And we meet industry leaders, policy makers, sustainability experts to address the challenges of the decarbonization of logistics. It also allowed us being up to date about the latest technologies and regulations which help us remaining in the right path.
