SFC's Conformity Assessment Scheme: Ready to assure your Market Based logistics reporting

Smart Freight Centre launched its Conformity Assessment Scheme to increase trust in GHG emissions reporting in the market. Whenever a company reports its greenhouse gas emissions inventory – be it to customers, investors or other stakeholders – the comfort that an independent third-party verification provides is undeniable. Based on ISO 14083, SFC built a scheme to train, assess and approve Validation and Verification Bodies to do competent assurance engagements in the logistics sector. In 2023, SFC approved the first Validation and Verification Body for verifying GHG emission claims in accordance with ISO 14083 for freight transport: Verifavia. Over the last two years, another three VVBs have joined that first one as Approved for the ISO 14083 scope.

Today, Market Based Measures are a fast-growing approach to reduce geographical, operational and commercial burdens in the reduction of GHG emissions.

In 2023, the SFC Market Based Measures Framework was the first truly cross-modal framework to describe the application of Market Based Measures following a multi-stakeholder collaboration and consultation.

With the release of the Market Based Measures Specification for Logistics Emissions Reporting (MBM Specification) in late 2024, SFC demonstrated that high transparency and high integrity Market Based Measures can be implemented and reported on already today.

Following customized training and examination, SFC is proud to announce that out of the pool of Approved VVBs, two of them are fully ready to verify Market Based Logistics accounting against SFC’s MBM Specification: Verifavia and Müller-BBM Cert. More are in the pipeline.

A lot is at stake in the budding MBM landscape, and the robustness and integrity of the “reductions”, booking & claiming and or Low-Emission Transport Solutions (LETS) are essential. Is your organization booking and claiming? If so, you need to consider your third-party verification strategy, and SFC is here to help!

Key documents are available here. For more information about the Conformity Assessment Scheme, such as how to become an Approved VVB or a Listed Emissions Reporter, please reach out to assurance@smartfreightcentre.org.

“Credible reporting on Market Based Measures following high standards is possible. With the expansion of our Conformity Assessment Scheme to the MBM Specification, we are demonstrating that VVBs can already today assess the validity of claims from companies implementing Market Bases Measures. We congratulate Müller-BBM Cert and Verifavia to being the first approved VVBs in this new scope of our Conformity Assessment Scheme”
