Smart Freight Centre Publishes Guide to Unlocking Sustainable Aviation Fuel for Cargo Decarbonization

Amsterdam, September 8, 2025 - Smart Freight Centre (SFC) today released a new publication on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), highlighting its pivotal role in the decarbonisation of air transport, with particular relevance for the cargo sector.

SAF Report (Website) (2)

The publication aims to provide clear and accessible information to a wide audience, addressing a subject that is often seen as complex but essential to achieving a low-carbon aviation sector. It is designed as a practical entry point for stakeholders across the logistics and aviation ecosystem.

The document focuses on four key areas:

  • Understanding SAF – its definition, production methods, and potential climate benefits.

  • Current Scale – the extent of SAF use today and available volumes.

  • Policy Landscape – the influence of global government policies, mandates, and incentives.

  • Accounting for SAF – guidance on integrating SAF into corporate emissions reporting, including Book & Claim systems and SFC’s Market-Based Measure (MBM) Framework.

SAF is essential to near-term aviation decarbonisation, especially for cargo. With this guide, SFC is helping the market move from intent to implementation—clarifying what SAF is, where it stands today, and how companies can credibly account for it through Book & Claim and the MBM Framework.
