SFC Certification

This page was previously called Accreditation

Become an SFC Certified partner

For tools and programs designed to offer logistics GHG emissions calculation and reporting as a service or in-house tools, that companies use to provide individual greenhouse gas emission reporting to their customers.

What is SFC Certification?

SFC checks if there is a methodological conformance with the requirements of ISO 14083 and the GLEC Framework. We use a technical specification and checklist that match the principles and data structure of the GLEC Framework and assess each application against it. The methodology assessment consists of two core aspects of calculation and reporting:

  1. Methodological conformance with ISO 14083 and correct application of the GLEC Framework.
  2. Reporting in conformance with ISO 14083 and correct application of the GLEC Framework.

Who is SFC Certification for?

Tools/programs that would like to support their client companies by credibly calculating/reporting logistics GHG emissions against ISO 14083 with the application of the GLEC Framework, so that these companies are able to demonstrate this with confidence internally, to their customers and to external stakeholders.

Why is SFC Certification important?

Many companies want to reliably calculate and report the GHG emissions associated with their freight transportation and logistics activities by using the GLEC Framework. Various calculation tools and programs on the market offer support for this.

But how can companies be certain that the external support is calculating and reporting their logistics emissions correctly in conformance with ISO 14083 and the GLEC Framework? How can tool and program providers gain trust and proof of this conformance to their customers?

By choosing one of our SFC Certified partners for the accounting and reporting, companies can be confident that the GLEC Framework methodology is correctly applied, and the requirements of ISO 14083 are met. Tools/ programs can credibly demonstrate, through SFC Certification, that they are calculating and reporting logistics GHG emissions against the industry standard – ISO 14083 and applying the GLEC Framework correctly.

What has changed with respect to Accreditation?

This page and related process was previously called “Accreditation”. This service has been updated to reflect the latest changes and developments, incorporating the requirements of ISO and referencing the GLEC Framework, while accreditation only focused on the latter. The launch of SFC’s Certification service ensures adherence to the ISO 14083 international standard, with the application of the reference industry guidance the GLEC Framework, when it comes to Logistics Emissions Accounting and Reporting.

Certification specification

The certification covers, among others, the following priority issues:

  • Calculation and reporting of well-to-wheel GHG emissions, expressed in units of CO₂ equivalent according to the scopes of ISO 14083 and the GHG Protocol Corporate Value Chain Accounting and Reporting Standard
  • Inclusion of transport operations and hub operations, according to ISO 14083
  • Inclusion of the effects of empty running, partial vehicle loading and repositioning journeys, diversionary and/or out-of-route distance to ensure complete emission reporting, according to the guidance contained within the GLEC Framework and associated base methodologies
  • Classification of input data type (primary, default or modelled) to aid transparency over the nature of the calculation output
  • Use of GLEC Framework- specified default emission intensities in case carrier energy consumption and operational data is not available
  • Use of the fuel emission factors specified in the GLEC Framework, and when sourcing low emission fuels with differing feedstocks use fuel provider specific emission factors (as long as ISO 14083 compliant). Where necessary equivalent factors required by national legislation are to be used
  • Ability to provide outputs in conformance to the ISO 14083 requirements

The process can be schematized as follows:

Contact SFC to confirm through a certification that your tool for GHG emissions conforms with ISO 14083 and the GLEC framework.
