Investing In Zero Emission Trucks

The Time Is Now

Scaled up deployment of zero emission truck can deliver many benefits from cost savings, competitive advantages and enhanced driver conditions to truck users to new employment, less oil imports, better air quality and reduced climate change emissions. For nearly all truck applications zero emissions trucks are growingly available at/near TCO cost parity with conventional trucks. Yet investment barriers, like high upfront investment costs, (perceived) residual value risk and limited access to finance hamper investments and financing often comes at high costs as risk, return and scale requirements of financiers are not sufficiently met.

This workstream tries to overcome these barriers. At the core of it is building and selecting viable use cases with a high likelihood of attracting finance. It will require close cooperation with shippers and carriers to anchor the viable cases in logistical realities. And it will require that pre-lending stakeholders across the value chain are encouraged to contribute to de-risking investments.

By signalling their interest in viable business cases and the readiness to discuss more conducive lending terms (longer tenure, lower interest, easier requirements on collateral) can reinforce interest in scaling up and enhance a positive TCO will ensuring financial solidity.

Scaling Up

Overcoming the finance barriers will encourage interest and confidence on the shippers/carrier/cpo -side in scaled up deployment and on the financier's side to provide more conducive lending conditions. This interaction will positively influence the TCO and aspired cost parity.

Overcoming the investment barriers can also be achieved by new approaches to finance aimed at lowering the high capex cost: as-a-service solutions, setting up assetco’s financing batteries as operational expenditure are illustrations of this.

This workstream aims to organise targeted processes to:

  • Build and select viable use cases (see the India data partnership as example: link)
  • Organise the value chain process to activate and consolidate the contributions across the value chain to derisking
  • Organise the matching and activation of conducive finance offers
  • Design and build specific (de-risking/insurance) instruments

By conducting various scale up project across the globe the aim is to deliver an investment handbook for zet investment scale up by end of 2027.
