What is the Global Ro-Ro Community?
An initiative supporting decarbonization of Roll-on Roll-off (Ro-Ro) ocean freight transportation.
Launched in 2024, Global Ro-Ro Community primarily involves ocean Ro-Ro carriers and cargo owners (OEMs amongst others) and focuses on tracking and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from Ro-Ro shipping transportation. The program also shares Ro-Ro Ocean freight decarbonization best practices.
What does the Global Ro-Ro Community do?
Through the Global Ro-Ro Community, SFC provides methods and tools that generate high quality, decision useful greenhouse gas emissions performance information for Ro-Ro carriers and cargo owners (OEMs). The Global Ro-Ro Community also serves as a forum where ocean Ro-Ro carriers, cargo owners (OEMs) and other stakeholders can come together to collaborate and share decarbonization best practices.
SFC oversees the regular creation and disclosure of carrier specific greenhouse gas emissions performance information according to transparent, industry accepted greenhouse gas emissions accounting methods for deep-sea Ro-Ro shipping. There is no other program, initiative, or service – voluntary or regulatory – that generates Ro-Ro shipping emissions performance information at the level of aggregation, level of quality, and with the foundation in ship specific primary data as that generated by the Global Ro-Ro Community.
Global Ro-Ro Community participants
Global Ro-Ro Community carriers include the largest deep-sea Ro-Ro ship operators in the world as well as smaller short-sea operators, bringing both a comprehensive scope and a varied perspective to Ro-Ro shipping emissions performance reporting. Global Ro-Ro Community shippers / cargo owners include some of the world’s largest vehicle makers shipping finished vehicles using maritime transportation, making Global Ro-Ro Community an effective and holistic forum for Ro-Ro shipping decarbonization best practice sharing.

Organizations on their journey to freight decarbonization can become a member of Smart Freight Centre and join the SFC community. Members have access to a wide portfolio of initiatives and projects to help them collaborate to improve their GHG emission performance and supply chain economics. Membership unlocks solutions through several SFC programs, including Global Logistics Emissions Council (GLEC), Clean Cargo, Global Ro-Ro Community (GRC), Sustainable Freight Buyers Alliance (SFBA), and Clean Air Transport.
All SFC members can participate in Global Ro-Ro Community.
Because of the sensitive nature of some of the data managed under Global Ro-Ro Community, different participants in Global Ro-Ro Community have access to different aspects of the partnership.
Any SFC member can participate in Global Ro-Ro Community best practices sharing.
Ocean Ro-Ro carriers that participate in Global Ro-Ro Community submit third-party verified operational and technical data to SFC that SFC uses to calculate carrier specific emission performance information. The carriers have access to their own emission performance information for benchmarking and for greenhouse gas emission inventory calculations and disclosures.
Ocean Ro-Ro cargo owners (OEMs) that participate in Global Ro-Ro Community have access to route specific industry average emission intensity factors. They also have an opportunity to access reporting carriers’ emission performance information subject to carriers’ consent. Such industry wide and carrier specific emission performance information can be used to support their scope 3 greenhouse gas emission inventory calculations and their carrier procurement decision making.
Data and Methods
Global Ro-Ro Community carriers regularly submit third party verified vessel operational and technical information to SFC.
