What is FEC?
Smart Freight Centre’s Fleet Electrification Coalition (FEC) is a partnership of shippers, logistics service providers, fleet owners and other logistics industry stakeholders to accelerate large-scale electric truck (e-truck) deployment through demand aggregation. Our ultimate outcome is to enable 30% zero-emission road freight by 2030 and 100% by 2040 globally.
The right building blocks are in place to accelerate the deployment of e-trucks. The transportation sector faces a pressing challenge to reduce CO2 emissions and air pollution, particularly in road transport where trucks are responsible for a disproportionate share of emissions. Truck electrification is one of the most impactful strategies to decarbonize logistics. E-trucks reduce emissions from diesel trucks by over 90%, and battery-electric technology for trucks is advancing quite rapidly, with over 300 models worldwide attending most truck applications. Most e-trucks will be cheaper to own and operate before the end of the decade. With existing incentives — fiscal incentives, road toll exemptions, and carbon pricing — e-trucks are already the cheapest choice in some European countries today. Leading governments are setting clear regulatory standards that will accelerate zero-emission trucks, in particular in Europe and the U.S, spearheaded by California and other progressive states. These regulations will require that 30-45% of new truck sales be zero emissions by 2030 with a pathway to a full transition to zero-emission technologies in new vehicles by 2040. In addition, over 35 countries have aligned towards a common ambition towards these same targets
Despite technology readiness, growing model availability, expectations towards cost parity, and upcoming policy signals, the transition to e-trucks is hindered by high upfront costs, limited charging infrastructure, and financing obstacles. With the exception of China, e-trucks still represent less than 1% sales of new trucks globally
How - Theory of Change
Collaboration and demand aggregation are key. Overcoming these challenges will require collaborative efforts among stakeholders, and in particular shippers who are the ultimate drivers of freight demand, to incentivize e-truck adoption through joint procurement, supportive policies, infrastructure investment, private financing, capacity building and guidance, and most importantly real-world deployments to demonstrate that the technology works today. By working together, leading shippers can aggregate demand for zero-emission road freight services and send strong e-truck demand signals to fleets, manufacturers, policymakers, investors, infrastructure providers and others.
What - Strategies for Action
The Fleet Electrification Coalition is a program born from one of the Sustainable Freight Buyers Alliance initiatives, and partners closely with CALSTART in North America. To overcome these key barriers - limited supply, infrastructure, and finance – the Fleet Electrification Coalition engages in these strategies for action:
Demand Aggregation
Channel shipper demand towards collaborative projects and partnerships
Joint Procurement
Mainstream zero-emission road freight procurement and establish new financial streams to fund the transition
Policy
Enable stronger and collective shipper engagement with policymakers for supportive regulations and incentives
Charging Infrastructure
Promote convenient, reliable and cost-effective solutions for shared and public charging infrastructure
Finance
Activate an investor network to scale up e-truck project finance to companies with limited access to capital
Knowledge Services
Scale up tools, guidance, and training to carriers and logistics stakeholders on road freight electrification
Events
Convene industry leaders through Smart Freight Center flagship events to spotlight and share best practices
