Drayage Alliance

Building on the proof of concept project in Rotterdam, we are expanding the scope by launching an alliance with a global scope to scale zero-emission drayage operations. Today, diesel-fueled trucks dominate drayage operations globally, resulting in significant air and noise pollution that harms frontline communities and GHG emissions that endanger global climate. Electrifying this segment not only advances climate goals but also significantly benefits local communities, reducing diesel pollution in frontline areas. It is an essential part of the logistics chain.

Ports are essential logistics hubs in extended supply chains and can be developed into ZE hubs that, when connected, create ZE freight corridors and end-to-end supply chains. Electrified port drayage can enable shippers to move goods along ZE corridors. The alliance will serve as a transactional space for electrified port drayage operations with committed freight buyers working towards achieving ZE drayage services, supported by a forum for knowledge exchange on procurement, finance, and policy. Achieving ZE drayage at scale requires coordinated efforts from all stakeholders, with freight buyers well positioned to drive this transition.

The alliance will draw from the lessons and best practices of ongoing initiatives such as the Fleet Electrification Coalition’s work on demand aggregation and the Port of Rotterdam project, and the Sustainable Freight Buyers Alliance’s Procurement Playbook, which provides concrete guidance to shippers on decarbonizing their logistics operations. It will equally build on the existing relationships with the finance and maritime communities of Smart Freight Centre.
